Lead does a lot of quiet work on Leamington roofs. On the Regency and Victorian streets around the town centre it appears as chimney and abutment flashing, step flashing and soakers against party walls, lead valleys between slopes, and small lead-covered sections over bays and porches. On the newer housing towards Sydenham and Whitnash it is usually chimney flashing and the junction where an extension roof meets the house wall.

Typical signs that lead needs attention are damp patches on a chimney breast or upstairs ceiling, staining down an internal wall where a roof meets an abutment, sealant smeared over a flashing by a previous repair, lifted or rippled lead after a windy spell, and debris collecting in a valley so water backs up under the slates.

Where flashing has simply lifted out of the mortar course, or a short length has split, a targeted repair is often enough. Where lead is thin, split in several places, undersized for the detail or has been patched repeatedly with mastic, renewing that section is usually the sounder option. Leadwork on flat sections such as bay tops and dormer cheeks is judged the same way, on the condition of the lead and the deck beneath it.
