New roofs & re-roofs
New Roofs & Full Roof Replacements
When a roof is past patching up, a full re-roof gives you a clean start. We strip, batten and cover it properly, with everything confirmed in writing.
Service overview
What is involved in new roofs & re-roofs
A new roof or a full replacement is the biggest job most homeowners will ever have done to their house, so it pays to know what's involved before scaffolding goes up. Whether it's a new build in Rugby or a tired 1930s roof in Coventry that's had one repair too many, the job starts the same way, with a proper look at the timbers underneath the covering.
On a re-roof we strip everything back to the rafters, check the purlins and timbers for rot or sagging, and replace anything that's not sound before a single tile goes back on. It's the only way to know the new covering has something solid to sit on. Skipping this step is how roofs fail again within a few years.
Once the structure is sound we fit a new breathable membrane, treated battens at the correct gauge for the tile or slate you're using, and felt support trays at the eaves where needed. This is also the point where we'd upgrade ventilation, fit soffit vents or address any cold roof issues while everything is open and accessible.
Covering choice depends on what suits the property and your budget, from concrete interlocking tiles through to clay plain tiles or natural slate. We'll talk you through the options on the free quote visit rather than pushing one option, because the right roof for a Victorian terrace in Leamington Spa isn't always right for a 1980s semi in Nuneaton.
Scaffolding is unavoidable for a full re-roof and we build the cost into the quote so there are no surprises later. Larger jobs, extensions or anything that changes the roof shape may need building control sign off, and we'll flag that at the survey stage so you know where you stand before work starts.
A re-roof usually beats another patch repair once you're chasing leaks in more than one spot, when the felt underneath has gone brittle, or when tiles are slipping across large areas rather than in one place. If a survey shows the timbers and membrane are still sound, we'll say so and recommend a repair instead, because a full re-roof isn't always the answer.
Timescales depend on roof size and weather, and we'll give you a realistic window at the quote stage covering Coventry, Solihull, Warwick, Kenilworth and the surrounding towns. We're fully insured for public liability throughout, and every guarantee is confirmed in writing alongside the quote so you've got it on paper.

Common problems
Problems we put right
The faults we see most often when homeowners ask us about new roofs & re-roofs.
Roof past patch repairs
Once a roof's had several repairs and is still leaking, the covering or felt underneath is often failing generally rather than in one spot. Patching becomes a losing battle and a full re-roof stops the cycle of call-outs.
Rotten timbers underneath
Old rafters, purlins or battens can rot from years of trapped moisture, even if the tiles above look fine. A re-roof is the only time these timbers are fully exposed and can be properly replaced.
No membrane or failed felt
Older roofs were often built with no breathable membrane at all, or with bitumen felt that's now brittle and torn. Water gets past the tiles and sits on old felt with nowhere to go.
Cold roof condensation
Roofs with poor ventilation and old insulation can suffer condensation build up in the loft space, which rots timber over time. A re-roof lets us fit proper ventilation as part of the job.
Our process
How we work, step by step
- 1
Free survey and quote
We climb up and check the roof structure, timbers and coverings, then give you a written quote covering materials, scaffolding and labour with no guesswork.
- 2
Scaffolding and strip out
Scaffolding goes up first for safe access, then the old covering, battens and felt are stripped back to the bare timbers so we can see exactly what we're working with.
- 3
Timber repairs and rebuild
Any rotten or damaged timbers are replaced, then new membrane, battens and ventilation go in before the new tiles or slates are laid and dressed at verges and ridges.
- 4
Finish and sign off
We clear the site, check the finished roof from ridge to eaves, and hand over the written guarantee that came with your original quote.
Why choose us
Benefits of choosing The Roofing Lads
Structure checked properly
Stripping the roof back means every timber gets inspected and fixed, not just the covering on top, so problems don't come back in a few years.
Better ventilation built in
A re-roof is the chance to sort soffit vents and airflow that older roofs often lack, cutting the risk of condensation damage later.
One team, start to finish
Our own roofers carry out the whole job, from scaffolding down to the last ridge tile, so there's one point of contact throughout.
Written guarantee on the job
Every re-roof comes with a guarantee confirmed in writing alongside the quote, so you know exactly what's covered before work starts.
A new roof or full replacement is a big decision, but it doesn't have to be a stressful one if it's planned properly from the survey onwards. We'll tell you honestly whether your roof needs a full re-roof or whether a repair will do the job just as well.
If you're weighing up a re-roof in Coventry, Rugby, Solihull or anywhere nearby, get in touch for a free written quote. We're fully insured, we use our own team throughout, and we'll talk you through the whole job before any scaffolding goes up.
