Loft Insulation & Ventilation

Loft insulation is one of the simplest jobs we do, but it's also one of the most misunderstood, because insulation on its own can cause problems if the ventilation isn't right alongside it. We fit and top up loft roll insulation across Coventry, Solihull, Warwick and the surrounding towns, always checking airflow at the same time rather than treating insulation as a job on its own.

In a standard cold roof build up, insulation sits between and over the ceiling joists, keeping heat in the rooms below while the roof space above stays at outside temperature. This only works if air can move freely from the soffits, along the underside of the roof and out at the ridge, because blocked airflow traps moist air against cold timbers and leads to condensation.

Topping up existing insulation is common where a loft has old, thin or compressed loft roll from years ago, and bringing it up to a better depth makes a noticeable difference to heat loss without much disruption. We'll clear the loft space of any obstructions, lay new roll between the joists and cross-lay a second layer over the top to avoid gaps at the joist lines.

Soffit vents at the eaves are the main air inlet for a cold roof and they're often blocked by insulation pushed too far into the eaves, by bird nesting material, or by paint over the years. Part of our job is checking these vents are clear and functioning, and fitting additional vents where the existing ventilation isn't enough for the insulation depth now recommended.

Condensation in a loft space shows up as damp timbers, black mould on the underside of the roof covering, or water droplets on nail heads poking through the felt or membrane. This is almost always a ventilation problem rather than a leak, and it's one of the most common call-outs we get once homeowners have topped up insulation without checking airflow at the same time.

Warm roof build ups, where insulation follows the roof line rather than the ceiling, are used in loft conversions and need a different approach, usually rigid insulation boards fitted between and under the rafters. We can advise which build up suits your loft depending on whether it's a straightforward insulation job or part of a wider conversion.
