Roof windows are one of the best ways to bring natural light into a loft, whether it's a conversion, a home office or just a dark landing that needs brightening up. We fit roof windows into tiled, slate and fibre cement roofs across Coventry, Solihull, Warwick and the surrounding towns, and the finish depends almost entirely on how well the flashing kit is fitted.

The job starts with forming the opening in the roof structure, which means cutting the existing rafters and fitting new trimmers to carry the load either side of the window, sized correctly to the window's rough opening. This structural work needs to be right before anything else happens, because a poorly framed opening can lead to sagging or draughts later on.

Once the frame is in, the window sits into the opening and the manufacturer's own flashing kit goes around it, matched to the specific tile or slate profile of your roof. Flashing kits aren't universal, a flat interlocking tile needs a different kit to a plain tile or natural slate roof, and using the wrong kit is one of the most common causes of roof window leaks.

Tiles or slates around the opening are cut and dressed into the flashing so water runs over the top and down the sides rather than pooling at the head of the window. On slate roofs this needs particular care because the flashing has to sit correctly under the courses above without disturbing the nailing pattern of the surrounding slates.

We fit both centre pivot and top hung roof windows depending on the ceiling height and how the room will be used, and can advise on size and position based on the loft layout. For loft conversions we often coordinate roof window installs with the wider building work, fitting the windows at the point that suits the build programme.

Internal finishing, plastering around the window reveal and fitting trim kits, can be arranged as part of the job or left for another trade if you're managing the wider project yourself. We'll talk through what's included at the quote stage so it's clear where our work stops.
